BookVision 2024
Awarded works of art
The third international student book art competition BookVision is a testament to the growing interest of students in this project and its continually expanding geographical reach. This year, students from 37 art schools and 14 countries submitted a total of 152 works of art, from which an expert jury selected 88 works for an exhibition at the Gallery of the Faculty of Fine Arts and Music, University of Ostrava and awarded works in each selected category (artist’s book, book-object and digital book).
The competition is a continuous reflection of current trends and themes on which students are working in the creation of artist’s books, as well as the relevance of the actual book as a medium within contemporary visual arts. The book is an object that, thanks to its low demands in terms of space and the relative ease of dispatch from almost anywhere, allows artist’s books, book-objects, and related manifestations to be presented together in large numbers in the space of a standard gallery.
It is very interesting to see how certain tendencies, approaches, and issues repeat in young artists’ works of art even though they come from different countries and art schools, and how the book carries and creates a certain generational statement. A common form is fanzines, experimental, and original poetry, various forms of diary, playful material, graphic and typographic experiments, the involvement of artificial intelligence and digital technology, conceptual projects, and picture books. The authors address topics that touch them deeply in their own lives, their relationships to other people, the world and/or place, creating a way of coming to terms with both, past and present events, and an array of societal issues and topics.
The collective presentational form, created thanks to the BookVision 2024 competition, also speaks of a cultural diversity, not only in terms of content and topics, but also in terms of the chosen fonts, paper, format, printing, binding, and other materials and elements used. Together they form a final impression and experience when we can actually take the books in our hands – a key moment of the project as a whole experience.
